I Perform the Performance – 2019

A live performance exploring the unstable space

I Perform the Performance explores the unstable space between live performance, acting and rehearsal. Dino Desica attempts to perform while simultaneously questioning what he is doing, allowing uncertainty, contradiction and self-consciousness to become visible rather than hiding them behind a finished performance.

The work developed from an interest in what happens when the desire to perform remains present even when there is no clear role, narrative or statement to deliver. Dino moves between acting and being himself, exposing his own ambition, fear of failure and desire to be seen.

Rather than resolving whether what happens on stage is acting or performance, the work keeps that distinction deliberately unstable. The process of trying to perform becomes the performance itself.

Contradictions, fears and ambitions that might normally remain hidden or be discarded during the making process are instead brought directly onto the stage. 

Moving between spontaneity and self-conscious performance, the work questions how much honesty is possible once something is presented to an audience. Acting and being begin to overlap, exposing the performer’s desire to be seen even when there may be nothing particularly profound to reveal. 

The work turns this uncertainty back towards the audience, questioning expectations around authenticity, entertainment and what a performance, or an artwork, is supposed to provide.
